Darragh O’Neill, composer, classical guitarist and protégé of Carlos Bonell, is one of the leading Irish guitarists of his generation. His  international career as a solo concert guitarist/composer has taken him to many of the great concert venues around the world. Highlights  include Carnegie Hall in New York, Wigmore Hall in London,  Oude Kerk in Amsterdam, The Manggha Theatre in Krakow, and  numerous sell out performances back home in his native Dublin’s  National Concert Hall. His highly acclaimed performances are always noted for their stylistic awareness, with equal measures  of delicacy and virtuosity. This 17 piece big band orchestra plus a guest vocalist Stella Bass  will perform music from the ‘40s & ‘50s along with some more  modern tunes. In one night you can experience excitement, delicacy, humour, a rhythmic big noise, beautiful melodic small  sounds and go home with a bounce in your step. Instant Orchestra has been travelling the world introducing new participants of all ages to the inspiring and musical adventure of joining an instant orchestra. In this fun and interactive workshop led by Martin Brunsden, you’ll learn the simple technique of playing the angklung, a tuned bamboo rattle from Indonesia, to exciting and  original music. No musical experience is required and the more players and variety of ages the better! One of Ireland’s foremost harpists, Laoise is currently performing with Christy Moore, having recorded and shared stages with Kate Bush, The Chieftains & Dónal Lunny. This year’s theatrical event of readings and music marks Carrick’s 400th Anniversary  by celebrating four  of its contributors to the Arts & Humanities. Brian Leyden, author and broadcaster, will narrate this extraordinary line up of readers and music Sorcha Fox, director-writer-actress, will play SUSAN L. MITCHELL, an Irish writer and poet born in Carrick-on-Shannon in 1866 who was known for her satirical verse. She was assistant editor of The Irish Homestead under George Russell and she knew William Butler Yeats, Padraic Column, George Moore and many other notables of her time.  Declan Gallagher, actor, will play M.J. MacMANUS.  Born in Carrick in 1887, he became the literary editor of The Irish Press from its foundation in 1931. As well as his journalistic skills, he was a writer of poems, parodies, and nonfiction works, and was considered one of the outstanding literary and journalistic figures of his time. The M.J. The Gala Water Music Marquee event on Saturday 29th is Slovakian star violinist Vladimir Jablokov’s ‘Classical Twist’. Back by popular demand, this is Vladimir’s third appearance at the Carrick Water Music Festival. Fresh from supporting Il Divo in the O2, ‘Classical Twist’ showcases a dynamic band of Slovak and Irish musicians and a special guest Vocalist taking familiar pieces from the world of both the classics and rock-pop; and reworking them into vibrant, exciting shapes.  Vladimir Jablokov started playing the violin aged five, making his stage debut at the tender age of ten. Coming from four generations of professional music makers, with a Russian maestro for a father and five musical siblings around him at home, Vladimir is steeped in the classical tradition.  Vladimir arrived in Ireland in 2004 and started busking on Grafton Street. Custard Pie  brings us their original portrayal of this Grimm’s fairytale classic, adapted a\nd directed by Conor Lambert. When rumours concerning hte miller’s daughter’s ability of weaving straw in to gold reach the King, she is summoned and ordered to reveal  her alchemic skills. The girl tells the King that she possessed no such skill, but he does not believe her and orders her to spin a barrow full of straw into gold by dawn or face banishment from the Kingdom. The girl despairs but help comes in the guise of Rumpelstiltskin!

Jessie de Bellis, a Uruguayan pianist living in Europe and an  Honorary Consul of Uruguay for Ireland, has performed in concert  halls around the world both in solo recitals and with orchestras. De Bellis joined the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia on their world tour, where she gave more than 400 concerto performances in more than 65 countries. She will be performing a Chopin Valse, Nocturne, Impromptu; also  a Schubert Impromptu and a Latin American programme. ‘Her interpretation of Tchaikovsky displayed power and strength’ The Evening Times Glasgow.

The legendary Finbar Furey will be performing a mix of old favourites and new songs from his last album, ‘Colours’ as the closing concert of the Carrick Water Music Festival. Finbar has a unique pedigree - an All-Ireland Uillean Pipe and Whistle Champion, singer/songwriter as well as playing 5-string banjo and guitar and now actor. Finbar has been round the block many times with brother Eddie, recording for Transatlantic records in the 60’s, and touring for several years in the US with The Clancy Brothers in the ‘70’s.  After 30 years of phenomenal success as the frontman for the family group, Finbar decided it was time to pursue his solo career and concentrate particularly on his own song writing, singing and playing the instruments for which he is loved- the uileann pipes, 5 string banjo and the low whistle. Art & Music Workshops for 4-7year olds €60 for the week, Monday to Friday (family rates apply) Please call the box office if you wish to book more than one child’s place in our series of workshops Facilitator Édaín Ní Dhomhnaill In this workshop the children will learn to focus on sound, listening to music and interpreting it in colour through paint, collage, printing and in making through clay, mosaic, gem stone sculpture. it will be both relaxing and inspiring. Wonderful for the imagination…and a range of skills will be developed. Each day will be structured around different instruments, played both live & pre recorded,and different sets of art/craft materials….we will be making 2 & 3D artworks, including wearable art, and making instruments. Some artworks will be selected for an exhibition at the end of the week, and on the last day we will have a short performance supporting our wearable art, and playing our “instruments”. What Colour is The Sound 8-12yr olds

Workshop for 8-12 year olds 2.30pm – 5.30pm €60 for the week (family rates apply) Facilitator Édaín Ní Dhomhnaill In this workshop we will be absorbing the sounds of traditional music, dancing and song, and responding visually. Every day we will listen to different instruments played both live and prerecorded. Expressing responses to the music through drawing, painting and sculpture, we will make a book, (inspired by stories we write inspired by the tunes) masks, puppets and instruments. The children will explore many materials including charcoal, chalk pastels, collage, acrylic, inks, clay and mosaic tiles and gem stones, and oil paints on canvas. We will have a little exhibition and performance at the end of the week.
